Genetic Control of Growth, Wood Density and Stem Characteristics of Pinus pinaster in Portugal

چکیده
A Pinus pinaster Ait. progeny trial involving 46 open pollinated families was established at two locations in Portugal (Leiria and Escaroupim). Height, diameter, Pilodyn and stem characteristics (straightness, branch size and number of whorls) were assessed at age 5 and 12 and were used to estimate variance components, heritability, phenotypic and genetic correlations between traits. Estimates varied considerably between the two sites. However, this study indicates that the heritability for height followed the general pattern of increasing with the age of the trees. A strong and favourable genetic correlation between the stem form and branching was also found. Heritability of Pilodyn was very low, suggesting that measurements taken at age 12 were not a reliable measure of wood density, probably due to the high proportion of juvenile wood.

Raw material characteristics of maritime pine (Pinus pinaster Ait.) and their influence on simulated sawing yield
The objective of this work was to study maritime pine (Pinus pinaster Ait.) wood characteristics and their impact on the sawing yield using virtual stem models and sawing simulation procedures. In the first part of the work, a characterisation of maritime pine as raw material for the wood industry was performed. The stem shape, distribution of knots, and heartwood/sapwood contents were studied....
متن کاملEffects of Recent Minimum Temperature and Water Deficit Increases on Pinus pinaster Radial Growth and Wood Density in Southern Portugal
Western Iberia has recently shown increasing frequency of drought conditions coupled with heatwave events, leading to exacerbated limiting climatic conditions for plant growth. It is not clear to what extent wood growth and density of agroforestry species have suffered from such changes or recent extreme climate events. To address this question, tree-ring width and density chronologies were bui...

Context: Understanding biological processes in forests is necessary to orientate ecosystem management towards potential C sequestration. To achieve this, information is required about changes in forest biomass C pools, including the stem components (bark, sapwood and heartwood). Aims: This study aimed to determine whether there are differences in C concentration in axial and radial directions w...
متن کاملPlastic Response of Tracheids in Pinus pinaster in a Water-Limited Environment: Adjusting Lumen Size instead of Wall Thickness
The formation of wood results from cambial activity and its anatomical properties reflect the variability of environmental conditions during the growing season. Recently, it was found that wood density variations in conifers growing under cold-limited environment result from the adjustment of cell wall thickness (CWT) to temperature. Additionally, it is known that intra-annual density fluctuati...
متن کاملClimatic Signals from Intra-annual Density Fluctuation Frequency in Mediterranean Pines at a Regional Scale
Tree rings provide information about the climatic conditions during the growing season by recording them in different anatomical features, such as intra-annual density fluctuations (IADFs). IADFs are intra-annual changes of wood density appearing as latewood-like cells within earlywood, or earlywood-like cells within latewood. The occurrence of IADFs is dependent on the age and size of the tree...
